In a rare interview, zen buddhist master Thich Nhat Hahn warns of the threat to civilisation from climate change and the spiritual revival that is needed to avert catastrophe.
He is seeking to create a spiritual revival that replaces our consumption-based lives with a return to a simpler, kinder world based on deep respect for each other and the environment... here. Thich Nhat Hahn Buddhist retreat at Nottingham University. Photograph: Frank Schweitzer
Tranquilising ourselves with over-consumption
In it, he writes: "The situation the Earth is in today has been created by unmindful production and unmindful consumption. We consume to forget our worries and our anxieties. Tranquilising ourselves with over-consumption is not the way."
In his only interview in the UK, Thay calls on journalists to play their part in preventing the destruction of our civilisation and calls on corporations to move away from their focus on profits to the wellbeing of society... here.
Growth until Collapse?
The independent newscast Kontext TV, suppoted by Noam Chomsky and many others, has published a new broadcast:
Growth until Collapse?
With Vandana Shiva, civil rights activist and ecologist, India, awardee of the Right Livelihood Award
Tim Jackson, professor of economy at Surrey University, author of the book "Prosperity without Growth"
Most politicians and economists consider economic growth as the solution for all sorts of crises like unemployment, the debt crisis or global poverty. But since the Club of Rome report "The Limits to Growth", published in 1972, there are doubts whether the economy can go on growing without destroying its own foundations. Humankind is already consuming resources as if there were 1.5 planets available. Climate change and the destruction of biodiversity are accelerating. At the conference "Beyond Growth?!" in Berlin, Kontext TV talked to two of the most well-known critics of the growth model.
The broadcast has 4 parts:
1. Tim Jackson: The Limits to Growth
2. Tim Jackson: Ways out of Growth Trap, Consumerism and Profit Hunt
3. Vandana Shiva: How Growth Causes Poverty and Climate Havoc
4. Vandana Shiva: Civil War in India as a Result of Resource Depletion

There comes a time when technology turns a corner.
Renewable energy technology avoids burning fossil fuels. We have many including solar, wind and wave but all share one factor in common - they're all affected by the weather. It's too cloudy or it's not windy - making them unreliable - and power needs to be reliable. To deliver regulated power is complex and ususally requires batteries or costly energy storage. Much thought has gone into how to maintain base-load - a constant 24 hour cycle - but it raises the cost of the already expensive technology even higher.
Hidro+ disassembles preconcieved ideas of how renewable energy must be augmented with backup and replaces it with a simple 24 hour workhorse. Unaffected by the weather, giving a consistent 24 hour operation, Hidro+ delivers base load. Hidro+ by James Kwok is the world's first truly Sustainable Power Station, the first real step into the Eco Sustainable Age.
We are riding a new wave of industrial revolution into the RENEWABLE ENERGY AGE. Renewable Energies bring only advantages and no burden to the world.
The ECO SUSTAINABLE PLANET and ECO SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY sections often overlap - as crops become fuel and microorganisms make electricity - the line is blurred and indeed that is the desired 'interconnectedness' effect.
All these exciting new green technologies could become marketable at any time. To clarify exactly what is available now, you'll find WAPSEC is in the business of WATER & POWER SECURITY. WAPSEC supplies 'wholistec' solutions with leading-edge technology from Germany and Australia.
ECO SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY Ecology and Technology working together in synergy. SUSTAINABLE is 24 x 7. ECO SUSTAINABLE is when there's no waste. The waste product of one process is fuel for the next.
THE AGE of ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY - inspiration leads to innovation, and solutions provide engineers and architects methodologies to green the world. Man learns to live with the planet.
